You guys, I have been DYING to show you this client's quilt ever since it was on my frame a month ago, but I was sworn to secrecy. This quilt top was created by my client Preeti of SewPreetiQuilts using improv piecing techniques (no pattern available). Her inspiration for the quilt, entitled "Spring Broken," was the lost opportunity to enjoy this year's Spring Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. due to pandemic restrictions. The fabrics are all from Ruby Star Society. Isn't this gorgeous?
Raindrops On Water E2E on Preeti's Spring Broken Improv Quilt |
I love it when clients send me quilt tops that are so different from the projects I'm working on myself. I've never tried my hand at improv piecing before, but now I've made up my mind to sign up for an improv piecing workshop the very next time I have an opportunity to do so.
We chose the Raindrops on Water quilting design because of the energy those spiraling curves create as a counterpoint to the fractured straight lines in the improv piecing. The design also reminded Preeti of raindrops falling on the Tidal Basin at the National Mall, or of the ripples created when cherry blossom petals flutter down and land on the surface of the water. We used Quilter's Dream Cotton batting. The quilting thread is So Fine 50 weight in color Peach Tart.
The Raindrops on Water E2E design looks great on so many different quilts, especially modern quilts like this one.
This is the quilt that I could only show you the backing of in this blog post.
46 x 48 Spring Broken Quilt with Raindrops on Water E2E |
I couldn't get the lighting to cooperate with me on the day of my photo shoot -- just could not get a shot of the entire quilt that showed the cheerful, vivid colors accurately but that also showed the texture of the quilting design, and I couldn't reshoot on another day because I needed to ship the finished quilt back to Preeti. My favorite shot is this one below, with shadows created by my window shutters.
To read more about Preeti's inspiration and improv process for making this quilt, and to see how it looks once she finished it off with a sassy striped binding, check out her blog post here.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch...
Hand Stitching Half Inch Binding on Giverny Teleidoscope Quilt |
With a week to go before the end of the month, I'm about 3/4 finished hand stitching the binding on my son Anders' Giverny Teleidoscope high school graduation quilt. I'm just working on that at night by the television when I'm too tired to safely operate machinery. So I should have that totally finished and ready to share by the end of this week. I've also been working on a few other clients' quilts that I can't share quite yet. And there is BIG NEWS coming soon from my studio in conjunction with a birthday that is being foisted upon me this Thursday, but this blog post is long enough so I'll wait to share my news until next time! 😉
My To-Do list for this week is short and sweet:
- Finish binding Anders' kaleidoscope quilt and get it washed, photographed, and delivered to the church office
- Two client quilts need quilting and two more need binding
- Research, planning, and a few major decisions remaining to be made regarding my Big Birthday Surprise!
PSST!! I'd Love to Quilt for YOU!
By the way, if you or any of your quilty friends has a quilt top or two that needs quilting, I'd be delighted to quilt for you! My turnaround for edge-to-edge quilting is currently running about 2-3 weeks, and you can click here to find out how to book your quilt with me.

love Preeti's quilt and your quilting on it - I love that design
Preeti's quilt is beautiful! That is a great design. Terrific that you are so far with your binding!!! You are making good progress with your lists!
Oh oui je comprends à quel point ça a dû être difficile de garder le secret sur ce superbe quilt ! Bravo pour le magnifique quilting, ce motif est parfait.
Great progress on your to-do list too ;) And what, big news? I love mysteries ;))
The quilting makes Pretti's quilt sing! Happy stitching, happy birthday!
It is a pretty quilt. The circular quilting pattern compliments it nicely!
Gorgeous quilting on Preeti's improv quilt. Great job!
What fun to be able to do the quilting on Preeti's quilt, and you two came up with a great quilting design for Spring Broken. I love the quilt, the story, and the collaboration between the two of you. So curious about the big news . . .
I read Preeti's post yesterday about this quilt. You both did a fantastic job on it. The spirals are just so fun! You are a tease, about your big news! I have a birthday foisted upon me the following week.
Great job on Preeti's "Spring Broken". Her blog posts explaining her quilt designs are always so entertaining. Can't wait to hear your birthday surprise. Happy Birthday in advance.

I loved this when I saw the background, then saw it on Preeti's blog and again here. That design is perfect for this quilt. Love the wide binding and the hand stitching at night is perfect...I find that is the best time, too, for me. Improv isn't my thing....I always feel like it is a hot mess. Let me know if you find a class you want to do, maybe I'll join in if it zoom!
Oh my the spiral quilting is stunning and just makes this sweet quilt so perfectly full of love and sweetness. I too like to sew binding in the evening, when I'm exhausted. I'm looking forward to seeing the graduation quilt and hearing the big news when you have time to share. I hope you have a wonderful week with plenty of time to enjoy and create.
You, my dear Rebecca, are the preventer of UFOs. You let me do what I enjoy doing without having to agonize over what must be done. I get to immerse in the creative process while you make it stable and permanent, while enhancing and complementing my work. Love you and love your work!!! I will be back next week for more :-)
Preeti's quilt is stunning and so cheerful and the quilting is amazing, Rebecca. Great job to the both of you. Have a lovely week and happy quilting.
Absolutely gorgeous compliment to the piecing. What a wonderful collaboration to get to a finished quilt.
Hi,
Awesome quilt...love the quilting...it brings the whole
quilt together. Have a great day!
I noticed that amazing quilting on Preeti's quilt right away, Rebecca! It's so perfect for the design of the quilt all in squares and rectangles. Gorgeous! And congratulations on getting your son's graduation quilt done, too!
Perfect quilting design for all those straight lines!!
such a great quilting design for Preeti's quilt! and congrats on getting the graduation quilt completed!
Wonderful quilt design. I am using rulers to do my Footnote quilt and using circles to "target" some of the blocks. Orange Peels on the rest of them for a change up.
Perfect quilting in a beautiful quilt! Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
You did such a great job quilting Preeti's quilt. Thank you for linking up to TGIFF!
